Home address given as Mountsorrel, Leicestershire. George 'Fred' Bignell served in 8th Bn The Leicestershire Regiment during the First World War, entering France on 29.7.1915. He was awarded the M.M. as a Private (L.G. 6.1.1917, page 344) for his actions during the attack on Bazentin Wood on the Somme in mid-July in 1916. Discharged 3.3.1919. In 1923 he served with the 2nd Bn in Khartoum, Sudan. Latterly 'Fred' lived in Earl Shilton, and died in 1972, aged 76 years.
He was the son of Pte Frederick Bignell (18697) of the same Battalion, who was Killed in Action at Gueudecourt on 25.9.1916.
